HOW TO PLAY

Hearts is one of the most popular card games worldwide. It is played with a standard deck of 52 cards and shares similarities with other trick-taking games like Spades and Euchre.

The objective of the game is to score the fewest points possible. Points are earned by capturing hearts and the Queen of Spades. In the default game mode of Simple Hearts, the game ends when a player accumulates 50 points. However, this can be adjusted to end at 100 or 150 points, or after a specific number of rounds.

HEARTS TERMINOLOGY

• Breaking Hearts: Players cannot play hearts until they have been "broken" by someone discarding a heart on a trick.
• Discarding Cards: If a player is unable to play a card of the led suit, they can discard any card.
• First Trick: Penalties cards (hearts and the Queen of Spades) cannot be played on the first trick.
• Following Suit: Players must play cards of the same suit as the first card played in each trick, if possible.
• Hand: The cards held by a player.
• Passing: Before each round, players pass three cards to another player. The direction of passing changes each round.
• Penalty Cards: Hearts are worth 1 point, and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points.
• Shooting The Moon: When a player captures all hearts and the Queen of Spades in a single round, they score zero points while each opponent scores 26 points.
• Trick: One card played from each player in a round.
• Trick Winner: The player with the highest-value card of the led suit collects the trick.
• Voiding a Suit: When a player has no cards of a specific suit left, that suit is considered voided. This allows them to play cards of other suits when that suit is led.

TIPS

• Be cautious when passing cards, as you may unintentionally assist an opponent attempting to shoot the moon by passing high-ranking cards.
• Keep track of the cards that have been played. There are 13 cards of each suit in the deck, so strategic playing around remaining cards can give you an advantage.
• Voiding a suit (getting rid of all cards of a specific suit in your hand) can be a beneficial strategy for playing your penalty cards on opponents.
